Freddie Hunt, son of 1976 Formula One World Champion James, has tested a NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) car for the first time at the Slovakia Ring ahead of his move to the series which will headline American SpeedFest IV at Brands Hatch on 11-12 June 2016.
Freddie will compete for DF1 NASCAR Racing in the 2016 NWES alongside Matthias Lauda, the son of James Hunt’s legendary title rival Niki. Lauda and Hunt senior’s battle was the subject of Ron Howard’s 2013 motion picture Rush, and some of the movie’s scenes were shot at Brands Hatch. The two famous surnames will return to Brands Hatch in 2016, 40 years on from the contentious British Grand Prix at the Kent circuit, which proved to be one of the defining moments of the season.
Freddie has made guest appearances in a number of different classes over the past few seasons, including the Renault UK Clio Cup, supporting the British Touring Car Championship, and Formula Ford 1600.
Hunt commented: “Initially the car felt very alien to me but as the test went on I started to get to grips with it and set some good lap times towards the end of the day. With a bit more time in the car, I feel confident I can be competitive next year.”
The NWES brings all the colour and excitement of US stock car racing to Europe and will headline an on-track programme at SpeedFest IV which will include historic V8 racing and much more.
